Here is a “Golden Niblet.” Food can seem boring, and overly complicated to understand. Your parents tell you to eat your vegetables. Doctors tell you to drink less soda, and consume less beef. Nutritionists insist you include a rainbow of produce in your daily diet, and avoid sweets and processed foods.

None of those dictates will be found below. Here are a few fun and/or interesting fun facts that might give your brain a break, and a quick knowledge boost.

1. Red Bell Peppers have 3 times as much Vitamin C as an orange.

2. A cucumber is the most hydrating of al fruits and vegetables. It is 96% water. A watermelon is only 92% water. 

3. Although they once utilized carcinogenic dyes, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is now dyed, but not seasoned with turmeric, paprika and annatto spices. 

4. Dark chocolate can reduce the risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. 

5. A regular russet potato has twice as much potassium as a banana. 

6. Walnuts are the mightiest, heart healthy, nut you can pick out of the trail mix bowl. 

7. Dark orange sweet potatoes have more than 2 1/2 times the amount of beta-carotene as a carrot, and beta-carotene has the word “carrot” built into it. Go figure… 

8. In an emergency, coconut water can be used as a substitute for blood plasma. 

9. If stored in an airtight container, ground coffee can be stored for 3 to 5 months past its expiration date, and still have the same taste. Instant coffee can be stored for an additional 20 years!

Here’s A “Golden Niblet.” When you think, “high quality Olive Oil,” you probably immediately transition to thoughts of Italy. However, that route of thinking is flawed.

Italy is not the biggest producer of high quality Olive Oil. It’s actually Spain. Italy isn’t even the largest consumer of Olive Oil. That award goes to Greece.

If you are looking for a delicious, high quality Olive Oil, but you don’t want to sell your grandmother’s pearls to afford it, try a California produced oil. They’re fruity, aromatic and almost always 100% organic because they’re usually grown in the same vineyards as the grapes used to make California wines. Your tummy, wallet, the environment and the US economy will all thank you!

Bitter Melon is a fruit that reduces your blood sugar levels, and increases your metabolism.

Here’s a “Golden Niblet.” Why do you feel hunger sensations? Is it that you’re greedy? Is it that your body likes to keep itself on a timely ingestion schedule, or is it all just in your head? Well, yeah, it’s all in your head. That’s right, you’re bat-crap crazy. Deal with it!😂 No. Hunger Pains start in your head, but there is a logical reason.

When the human brain is running low on fuel, it sends a hormone, ghrelin, to the stomach that says, “Hey, digest something. I need some energy up here.” If there is not enough food in the stomach to digest, the acids from your stomach start beating up against the stomach’s walls. This causes a hunger sensation, or what some call Hunger Pain.

Humans do not respond well to discomfort. Therefore, we are triggered to do whatever we must to make discomfort cease. In order to make the Hunger Pains stop, we eat something. After we eat, the stomach begins, immediately, digesting the food, and the brain is fed its requested energy. Once that occurs, the brain is at full capacity to better captain the rest of your body.

That’s why your doctor is a stalker about adding more protein to your diet. You literally need it for optimal physical and organ function.

However, contrary to popular understanding, you don’t just get protein through meat and dairy. You can also get it through fruits and veggies.

Some of the best places to get a high hit of protein is through Peas, Beans, Kale, Collard Greens, Sweet Corn, Asparagus, Mushrooms, Summer Squash, Broccoli, Avocado, Arugula, and the list goes on…
